25 years of inspiration

Our history

With the right energy and ambition, it's amazing how far you can go. Here are some great periods in our history.

  • 1993

    The first Fitness First! Our journey began with a squash club in Bournemouth, UK.

  • 1998

    Fitness First became the first UK Health Club operator to enter mainland Europe.

  • 2000

    We made our mark in Asia and Australia, by acquiring two existing companies and their clubs - giving us a jump start in these markets

    We also opened our 100th club in Cologne, Germany.

  • 2001

    Just a year later, our 200th club opened, this time in Shepherds Bush, UK.

    We opened our first club in Hong Kong at the Grand Millennium Plaza, and later the same year, also welcomed members to our first club in the Philippines at RCBC Plaza.

    Our expansion across Asia continued with the openings of clubs in Singapore and Thailand.

    Malaysia opened the doors of its first club at Menara Manulife in November.

  • 2004

    We welcomed our one-millionth member.

  • 2005

    In May, we opened our first club in Indonesia at Plaza Semanggi, Jakarta.

  • 2006

    Officially recognised by the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) as the world’s largest health club operator.

  • 2008

    We opened our first club in India.

    Fitness First Australia partners with the Australian Olympic Team.

  • 2009

    Freestyle™ training was introduced into clubs.

  • 2012

    Andy Cosslett joined as Group CEO.

  • 2013

    We took Small Group Training to a new level, with the opening of The Zone in the Sydney Central Business District.

  • 2014

    Our revitalised rebrand went live following the initial UK launch on 13th January.

    Our 3,800sqm flagship Australia club opened in the Melbourne Central Business District.

    Fitness First Thailand collaborated with Muay Thai boxing champion Buakaw Banchamek to design and launch ‘Muay Fight Pro by Buakaw,’ the first ever freestyle boxing class based on Fitness First’s dynamic movement philosophy.

    The Asia team introduced Fit for Fashion, a reality TV show to motivate viewers to exercise their own right to a healthier and happier life.

  • 2015

    Over 4,000 inspired individuals now work for Fitness First in Asia.

    Oren Peleg takes over as Group CEO. Andy Cosslett becomes Chairman of the Board.

  • 2016

    Fitness First Asia developed the Certified Fitness Coach - our unique fitness methodology, that takes a personalised approach to fitness programming.
